The nightgown is the oldest form of sleepwear, mentioned quite late by historians under the name 'nightshirt' or 'camisole'. Before the nightgown, it seems people slept naked or in the clothes they wore during the day.
It is interesting how people's way of thinking changes over time. Before bed, garments were most often removed, simply staying and sleeping in those worn underneath (underwear such as undershirts and long johns). These clothing items, usually found beneath outer layers, were likely the only objects washed regularly.
